MammoSite

MammoSite® 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy is an advanced treatment option for some patients with early-stage breast cancer tumors that are three centimeters (about the size of a walnut) or smaller, with limited or no spread of cancer to the lymph nodes. This form of radiation therapy is administered following a lumpectomy. The radiation oncologist uses the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System to place a radiation source into the cavity or space left when the tumor is removed. This delivers a higher dose of radiation directly to the area where cancer is most likely to recur. It is delivered on an outpatient basis, requiring no hospital stay, and patients typically receive treatment in just five days rather than the traditional 5-7 weeks so patients treated with MammoSite are able to return to their daily lives more quickly.
